Punch Down

Everyone has heard of the virtues of a glass of red wine, with that in mind I headed to a fun event at Carruth Cellars Urban Winery & Tasting Room this past weekend http://carruthcellars.com/, that's Adam the owner preforming the punch down, looks like he knows what he is doing!
Definition: Punching down is done to keep the fermenting wine and skins mixed up during red wine fermentation. As the wine ferments, the skins rise to the top of the tank and form a thick "cap." It's important to break up the cap a few times a day to increase the extraction of color and flavor, and to prevent the cap from drying out and/or developing bacterial problems. A punch down means the cap was manually pushed back into the fermenting wine using an instrument that looks like a huge metal potato masher.

Wellness Wednesday

Apples! Great time of the year to explore all the different types, going apple picking, make a pie, or just enjoy a fresh delicious apple. I eat an apple almost every day, there are tons of health benefits which is why it was dubbed one of the original power foods. I remember an interview with a nutrition expert that said a good way to gage your hunger is to ask, will an apple satisfy me? Good question to help differentiate true hunger vs craving. Enjoy Wellness Wednesday, eat an apple and get out and move in nature - feed you body, rest your mind and your rejuvenate your soul.
Fun fact - In ancient Greece when a man proposed to a woman would he would toss her an apple and if she decided to catch it, it meant she accepted.

Wellness Wednesday - Cleanse Update

Checking in - I am on day #18 of cleanse. The process of detoxing has been like hitting a reset button for my body. It has increased my energy levels (although the first couple of days I recommend taking it easy, your body is working hard, and probably in a bit of shock!) I chose to do this to balance my hormones. I read your liver needs to be squeaky clean to work at it's highest level, that was the first 2 weeks. Than it's time for the adrenals, 2nd 2 weeks. Once the adrenals are up and running all the hormones can be reset. Will give a wrap up once I have completed the 30 days! If you have been on a cleanse, let me know who it went? And if you recommend the one you were on?
Thanks! Catch up soon! Maddie

Why Cleanse?

When you do a cleanse, you are going to get rid of the toxic build-up that’s currently in your body, these toxins may influence the way you feel and function every day.

The aim is to move you into a healthier state so that your metabolism speeds up, you burn fat faster, and feel healthier.

By cleansing, you move toward healthy body weight and increased vitality.

Wellness Wednesday  - SLEEP

7/10/2017

It's Wellness Wednesday, so I thought I would talk about sleep. Let's be honest, we are a mess without it!
I highly recommend splurging on a high quality mattress, mine is Sterns & Foster. High thread count sheets are a must and can be found at a discount at the sister stores (Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Home Goods). You can make your own lavender spray, using lavender essential oil, I am not a snob about brands of oils as long as they are therapeutic grade. If you don't want to toss and turn all night, take a few minutes to dump your brain and jot down what you are grateful for. I personally do not like any electronics in the bedroom (TV, digital alarm clock, computers, etc.) and try not to use them for 15-20 minutes before lights out. I have a ceiling fan that I leave on and I like the windows open, cooler the better for me, and as dark as possible.  That is my recipe for a good nights sleep, what's yours?
